The visit to La Cambe and Villers-Bocage, August 1999
The summer of 1999 saw myself and my travelling companion Michael Burrows visit the grave of Michael Wittmann and his crew, as part of our third Western European driving tour which also took in the Normandy beaches and the main street at Villers-Bocage, the scene of Wittmann's single handed demolition derby in June 1944.
The day of our visit to the Soldatenfriedhof was highly significant: August 8th, fifty-five years to the day from that fateful day which saw the Leibstandarte's greatest Tiger Ace meet his end. Here at long last are some images captured during that tour. The movies are fairly short; to view just click the appropriate thumbnail image.
1. The Graves of Michael Wittmann, Hein Reimers, Karl Wagner, Günther Weber and Rudi Hirschel, La Cambe (18sec., 1.1MB); 2. The striking Monument to the fallen at the Soldatenfriedhof, La Cambe (18sec., 0.9MB); 3. The Main Street, Villers-Bocage. The scene of Wittmann's greatest feat. (20sec., 1.5MB)
